Patients Don’t Support Prescription Price Hikes (And Neither Does Clinical Evidence) - November 17, 2021

...Muscular Dystrophy News Today captured just how egregious such a price was relative to prices in the rest of the world: “Largely, outrage focused on the fact that the key ingredient in Emflaza, deflazacort, is a corticosteroid — and these steroids, including deflazacort,  have long been used in other countries to slow the decline in muscle strength in boys with Duchenne MD.

  • HHS and FDA Drug Importation Idea: Important Takeaways - July 20, 2018

Azar is proposing a discussion about allowing imports of single-source drugs to lower costs Yesterday, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar announced that he was tasking FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb with forming a working group to explore how drug importation could be used to lower prices. See Gottlieb’s remarks on the proposal. The crux of the proposal is very narrow.

...More analysis on Gleostine and CeeNu Emflaza (deflazacort). The launch price in the U.S. was slated to be $89,000/year in 2017, but the drug company responsible, Marathon Pharmaceuticals, postponed the launch due to outrage about the price. The U.S. version was sold to PTC Therapeutics. One foreign version is licensed by Sanofi in the UK sold under the brand-name Calcort.

  • A Drug Importation Vocabulary Lesson: Misbranded and Unapproved Drugs - December 29, 2017

Words matter when it comes to drug importation As we close out 2017, personal drug importation via online pharmacies remains a viable lifeline for American patients who can’t afford prices at their local pharmacies. Recent FDA actions against pharmacy storefront offices in Florida, ones that help Americans buy more affordable meds internationally, are troubling.

...One telling example is the drug deflazacort, a steroid used to treat Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). That medication, available in other countries, was “unapproved” by the FDA for the treatment of DMD. American parents imported it for years from the UK, for their children with DMD, at a price of about $750 for a year supply of pills.

  • Do Board Members of PhRMA Support Importing Unapproved Medication? - February 22, 2017

Since Americans started importing medications for personal use in larger numbers at the beginning of the last decade, the Pharmaceutical Researchers and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), Big Pharma, has engaged in media and government relations scare tactics to try and stop them.

...To summarize: some folks are outraged because Emflaza (deflazacort) was launched at a price of $89,000 for a one year supply. This seems insane when foreign versions of deflazacort, which cost 1% that amount (less than $1000), are already imported for personal use.

  • What Emflaza’s Postponed Launch Says about Personal Drug Importation - February 17, 2017

Unapproved but safe and effective… Personal drug importation works! This week, drug company Marathon announced  it is postponing the launch of Emflaza, its recently FDA-approved version of an off-patent drug called deflazacort, in the face of heavy scrutiny by Senator Bernie Sanders and Congressman Elijah Cummings over its price tag – $89,000 a year.

*The total price listed on PharmacyChecker.com includes the accredited pharmacy’s shipping fee, which typically covers an entire order. Patients and caregivers may find it more cost-effective to purchase multiple medications in a single order.

Laws affecting the importation of medication for personal use are different from country to country. For instance, personal drug importation is expressly legal in Australia. In the United States, technically, it is illegal to import unapproved medication under most circumstances, whether through purchase over the Internet or while on a trip to a foreign country. U.S. government officials have stated that individuals who order non-controlled prescription drugs from foreign sources (up to a three-month supply) for their own use are not being pursued or prosecuted. The U.S FDA regulates the safety and efficacy of medications sold in U.S. pharmacies. Medications dispensed from outside the U.S. are regulated for safety and efficacy by pharmaceutical/pharmacy regulatory authorities in their respective countries. We just ordered for my 90 year-old Mom. In the U.S. generics are not always available. So using PharmacyChecker we felt that its member pharmacy vendors were vetted. This reassurance of reliability took much of the guess work out of our shopping task.

This website provides very helpful information on ordering medications from non-U.S. Sources. We save 50% to 60% on name brand meds that are not available in generic forms in the U.S. We have saved thousands over the years.

I feel safe ordering from a pharmaceutical company outside of the U S because the prescription I am using is exactly the same as those sold in the U S, however, the price is totally different. What I had paid in the U S for 90 pills listed at almost $500. For which I have been paying $72. From a Canadian company for 5 or 6 years now, the price includes shipping and is sometimes negotiable.

This happens to be a very good pharmacy that delivers name brand meds at a reasonable price. All of the meds that I have purchased through this pharmacy have been the exact product my doctor listed. All of the products were labeled with original manufacturer's identity and location with date of manufacture and expiration. I am certainly glad that I found this pharmacy. Great job.

I have been able to source several meds, at 10% of the american pharma cost. I have no doubt that I bought them where american pharma buys them, and then rapes the public. Thank you p checker

I am happy to see the entities that are endorsed by you. But I did have a horrendous experience with Canadian Pharmacy with my latest order. After switching the location from which my order was to be chipped, the order was and still is being held by US Customs. They did give me a replacement order which I finally did receive but that order was submitted MUCH later than it should have been. Bottom line, I waited OVER THREE MONTHS for my med to finally be delivered and that cost me more money to piece meal samples from my doc and out of pocket for short term needs. And, the order I did receive cost me MORE for FEWER tablets. I know Covid-19 played a part in this fiasco but the supplier simply DID NOT PREFORM!
