Asthma

Asthma

Asthma is a very common chronic disease that causes inflammation and swelling of your airways, resulting in difficulty breathing. As of 2020, the CDC reported that 25 million Americans suffer from asthma. Although there isn’t a cure, asthma symptoms are manageable through appropriate treatments. The issue isn’t the availability of asthma treatment. Rather it is the cost, which, considering that asthma is a leading chronic disease in children, is pummeling U.S. families. There are over 4.2 million children under the age of 18 dealing with asthma. Lack of access to affordable asthma treatments for kids leads to more emergency room visits.  Boys are more likely than girls to develop asthma. But, interestingly enough, that same trend reverses in adulthood, during which women are more likely to have asthma. Studies show that it could have something to do with hormone changes: estrogen increases and testosterone decreases airway inflammation. If not properly treated, asthma can result in death. Each day, 11 people on average in the U.S. die from asthma. Many of these deaths are avoidable through affordable access to the right treatment and care.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic disease that causes inflammation and blockage of airflow to the lungs. If you have been diagnosed, you should know this disease is prevalent as almost 16 million Americans have reported being diagnosed. It is a disease that can become dangerous if you do not take action either to prevent or manage its symptoms as COPD was recently the third leading cause of death in the U.S. If you have either conditions chronic bronchitis or emphysema you may already be at risk for COPD to take preventative steps today. COPD is a disease that progresses which means it can get worse over time if you don't cut out risk factors like smoking. COPD is treatable, allowing you to be in control of your symptoms and experience good quality of life.

Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (ED), also known as impotence, is a condition where the penis either is unable or struggles to achieve a strong enough erection for engaging in sexual intercourse. People over the age of 50 are the most likely (but not the only ones!) to experience erectile dysfunction. ED is common and nothing to be ashamed about. Approximately one third of all males go through it at some point or another. ED doesn’t make you any less of a man and it can be treated. ED has been shown to commonly affect but isn't limited to Caucasian patients over other ethnicities. Having erection issues from time to time is no reason to panic. If it becomes persistent, however, there are underlying conditions linked to ED of which you should be aware: alcohol or other substance abuse, stress, fatigue, overall blood flow, and even some medications can result in problems achieving an erection.
