PharmacyChecker.com, a website that provides critical pharmacy safety and pricing information for consumers who search for lower-cost medicines from Canadian and international online pharmacies, announces its support for the new proposed federal rules on medication importation, and reminds the public that safe personal importation is already a lifeline for millions of Americans.
According to a report by the Congressional House Ways and Means Committee, the same 79 drugs, which represent 60% of spending in Medicare, cost on average almost 75% less in other high-income countries than in the U.S. Based on a price analysis of products within that basket that are safe for international mail-order pharmacy, PharmacyChecker research shows that Americans are already saving 72% on average through ordering medication online from accredited international pharmacies.
As referenced in the proposed FDA rule, tens of millions of Americans have already imported medicines from Canada and other countries because the prices are so much lower. Public health experts affirm that the safest way to do so is using PharmacyChecker-accredited international online pharmacies. The same law that permits these wholesale programs to move forward, Section 804 of the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, also gives the FDA wide enforcement discretion to permit safe personal importation programs as well.
“We support the administration and the states as they move forward with pilot wholesale importation programs to bring down drug prices domestically so that fewer Americans will need the lifeline of buying online from foreign pharmacies,” stated Gabriel Levitt, president of PharmacyChecker. “While pilot programs that focus on Canada are a good start, expanding importation from the European Union will be necessary for future sustainability because Canada’s market is too small.”
