What is Varenicline?

VARENICLINE RECALL - Updated 9/29/2021

Pfizer has voluntarily recalled all lots of Chantix 0.5 mg and 1 mg Tablets to the patient (consumer/user) level due to the presence of a nitrosamine, N-nitroso-varenicline, at or above the FDA interim acceptable intake limit.

The popular smoking cessation drug Chantix reportedly has the potential to cause cancer due to higher than acceptable levels of an impurity called N-nitroso-varenicline. This is a nitrosamine impurity, which is one that we commonly may find in water and certain foods such as cured and grilled meats, dairy products, and vegetables. As a result, Pfizer has decided to expand its nationwide recall of Chantix (varenicline) tablets. Before you worry too much, you should know that there is no immediate risk to patients taking this medication. The fact remains that this increased risk is still far less than that of smoking, and the FDA is telling patients to continue to use the medication they have on hand and to discuss alternate strategies with their medical providers when they run out.

U.S. government officials have stated that individuals who order non-controlled prescription drugs from Canada or other foreign sources (up to a three-month supply) for their own use are not being pursued or prosecuted - although it is technically not legal for individuals to import most prescription drugs. The U.S FDA regulates the safety and efficacy of medications sold in U.S. pharmacies. Medications dispensed from outside the U.S. are regulated for safety and efficacy by pharmaceutical/pharmacy regulatory authorities in other countries. Read how regulations may differ by country.
