Librax Savings & Safety Information

Librax is a medication that is safe and effective for the treatment of ulcers and irritable bowel syndrome. Librax is often used to treat gastritis, peptic ulcers, spastic colon, irritable bowel syndrome, stomach cramps, and spasms.  Librax can also be used to control emotional factors of gastrointestinal disorders which means it can help out with anxiety. Librax works by relaxing the muscles in your intestines and bladder. Librax is a combination medication that consists of chlordiazepoxide and clidinium bromide. The active drug called clidinium in Librax helps reduce stomach acid and spasms.

PharmacyChecker accredited online pharmacies do not currently offer Librax or its generic versions for sale but we can help you find savings on the generic and brand versions at your local pharmacy. If Librax isn’t for you there is another alternative drug called Bentyl (dicyclomine) in the same class of anticholinergics/antispasmodics class that is effective for irritable bowel syndrome. However, only the generic version is available on the market.

Generic Bentyl called dicyclomine is a medication that is a good alternative to Librax for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome. It works by blocking a chemical in our body called acetylcholine to help stop muscle spasms and relax our intestines (similarly to Librax.) You can save 77% on generic Bentyl at local U.S. pharmacies using a free prescription discount card.

Why was Librax taken off the market?

In 2016, Bausch Health, formerly Valeant Pharmaceuticals, the drug manufacturer of Librax, announced a voluntary recall of certain lots of the medication because of drug stability issues and an impurity that was found called chlordiazepoxide related compound A (lactam). Having high levels of lactam in the body can result in feeling excessively drowsy or dizzy while taking the medication, the impurity can also affect how much of the drug is active in your body. Today, brand-name Librax is not available in the U.S. but there are generic options that are not part of the recall available abroad and at your local pharmacy.

Are Bentyl and Librax the same?

Bentyl and Librax are not the same medication but they are in the same class called anticholinergics/antispasmodic and Bentyl is a good alternative if Librax doesn’t work for you. Librax is a combination medication that in addition to the anticholinergic/antispasmodic properties it also contains a benzodiazepine which helps with anxiety, bentyl on the other hand is not a combination medication so it well not help anxiety symptoms.

Can you just stop taking Librax?

You should not simply stop taking Librax without speaking to your provider first as stopping this medication abruptly can result in seizures, stomach cramps, anxiety, vomiting, spasms, and tremors. If you happen to miss a dose by accident, skip that missed dose but make sure you are back on your regular schedule for the next dose. You should not double up any dose for a missed dose.

Does Librax reduce stomach acid?
